Cutting-edge programming

I'm not what you would call a "knife person." I have a few basics in the kitchen drawer, and that's it. So I was surprised by how oddly entertaining the TV shopping program The Knife Show (on Channel 227 on DirecTV) can be. Its host, Tom O'Dell, is to sharp objects what the late Crocodile Hunter was to deadly reptiles. His unbridled enthusiasm can make you think, "Is there a place in my living room for four giant medieval swords and 50 matching knives? After all, it's less than $100 if I buy in the next three minutes!" Then there are the walking canes that conceal razor-sharp daggers -- make sure they're legal in your state before buying, O'Dell cautions.

And this is clearly a man who occasionally lets his enthusiasm get the best of him. His hands have so many cuts and scabs that they look like street maps. But don't take my word for it; check out O'Dell's brilliance on YouTube (he's the one who comes onto the screen after the little mishap with a samurai sword).

I enjoy the constant sense of impending doom. When I was watching the other day, the woman host nicked herself and the display fell over a couple times. And that was in the course of about 10 minutes.
